Nikola’s birthday party

On this winter’s night we gathered at Van Hunks in Kloof Street to celebrate our cousin Nikola’s birthday. It was also a good opportunity to experiment with shooting party pictures in very low light.

We tried to avoid the flash, instead using the highest ISO and widest aperture possible, but unfortunately our EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens is too slow for this purpose. Maybe it’s time to look at acquiring one of those 50mm f/1.4 bad boys?

To compensate for the venue’s orange and red lighting I also tried adjusting the white balance using various settings, but all the photos came out blood red! So the simplest solution was switching to monochrome. We still have much to learn, but here is our blurry yield from the evening:
